DIM LIGHT [in progress]
Aspra Spitia ("White Houses") is a small settlement on the coast of the Corinthian Gulf in Greece established in 1960 to house workers of the Aluminium of Greece company. Today, this settlement remains deeply intertwined with the aluminium plant, with most residents employed by the facility, including a new generation of young adults in their 20s who have traded urban life for work at the plant.
Dim Light is a photographic project that explores the lives of these young workers within this close-knit community. In Aspra Spitia, where everyone knows each other, a strong sense of camaraderie is fostered, yet this familiarity also limits exposure to diverse perspectives. The aluminium plant serves as both a constant backdrop and a burden. The monotony of shift work weighs heavily on young adults who crave adventure and variety.
By focusing on the often-overlooked human aspects of industrial communities, Dim Light aims to contribute to the broader discourse on industrialization and its impact on social structures, offering a nuanced view of life in Aspra Spitia. It seeks to humanize the industrial narrative, fostering empathy and awareness of the unique challenges faced by those living and working in such environments, while highlighting the resilience and kinship of young workers as they navigate isolation and routine.
